Save the Ozarks - About Us
Who We AreWe are a grass roots non-profit organization formed in 2013 by a group of concerned Arkansas citizens from all walks of life. Together with our neighbors, friends, and communities across Northwest Arkansas, we are challenging the need for SWEPCO's proposed high voltage transmission lines, and we stand united against the negative effects that the powerlines would have on our health, economy, environment, and way of life.
Our Mission StatementSave the Ozarks' purpose is to preserve, protect and enhance the environment of the Ozark Highlands and the quality of life of all its inhabitants.
The Ozarks Highlands is a region with rugged but vulnerable karst terrain with mountains covered by montane forests; an abundance of rivers, lakes, and creeks; numerous caves, springs, sinkholes, stoney bluffs and outcroppings; rich biodiversity that includes endangered, threatened, and rare flora and fauna, some of which are unique to the Ozarks; and human habitat that includes historic structures and archeological sites. Each one of these is an essential part of the region's scenic beauty -- the natural splendor that is the raison d'etre for its tourism-based economy and the extraordinary quality of life of its inhabitants.
This quality of life depends first on air, water and soils that are protected from contamination by toxic chemicals and disease-causing organisms, and on the minimization and, where feasible, elimination of potentially harmful electromagnetic radiation. At socioeconomic levels, maintaining and protecting the quality of life of its people requires that their private property rights and values are also well-protected.
